Shreya Patra

Village: Rangabelia, Indian Sunderbans, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal

Craft: Mangrove honey collector in the UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Craft

  • Harvests and processes honey from wild colonies of Wild Bees of Sunderbans
  • Honey is collected from deep inside the mangrove forests
  • Every harvest is undertaken under Forest Department permits
  • Entirely seasonal and dependent on flowering cycles

Before Earth Story Farms

  • Honey was sold as a bulk commodity, with little value attached to origin or harvest method
  • Income lasted only for the short flowering season
  • Women rarely participated beyond informal labour, despite being central to post-harvest handling
  • The forest produced extraordinary honey. The market treated it as ordinary

What changed with Earth Story Farms

  • Shreya wasn't asked to harvest more honey. She had a market built, that valued it differently
  • Earns from a premium, single-origin honey instead of selling an anonymous commodity
  • Every harvest is now fully traceable from the Sundarbans to the consumer
  • Access to year-round livelihood opportunities through grading, product diversification, bottling and value addition
  • Better market recognition has translated into higher and more stable household income
